This will vary with size, fuel type and location. Permitting can take a couple of weeks to several months depending on these factors. Each state, county and city has varying codes that have to be met. Installation will vary from contractor to contractor. As a rule, a generator under 100 KW will take 1 to 4 months. Over 100 KW will take 4 – 6 months or longer from start to finish. Give yourself plenty of time in advance of the need to start planning for an installation. The lead times of generators can be lengthy, so make sure it is ordered early in the process especially if it has special requirements.
